When you go on stage, you are an agent of change. That is how public speakers affect society. It's a big job. As a traveling salesman in ideas, you will have a significant impact on people who hear you speak. Often, you will be the one helping them to shed light on the issues they are facing and help them out of a rut. People are creatures of habit (and yes, that goes for speakers too). You shake them up a bit. As a public speaker, you help them realize that whatever problems they are facing, they are not alone - and issues are solvable.

Ideas are how public speakers affect society

There is nothing more powerful than an idea, and there is no stopping someone who is committed to their work. This power is what you will handle as a public speaker. Even if you are not a history buff, consider the ideas that have shaped our world. The punch of ideas truly is more potent than the blow of a sword.

As a public speaker, you are a purveyor of ideas, and that means that you need to be responsible. Apples don't cure cancer; the earth is not flat, and so on. Your task is one of lifting ideas up and out into the light so people can see things from a new perspective and create a better tomorrow for themselves and the people around them. That is public speakers affecting society, and you can be one.

The road is long

Just because public speakers affect society, doesn't mean it is a smooth line of work to be in. There is a lot on late nights spent researching, and there are countless hours spent in airport lounges, and hunting for customers via phone or at events. You also need to be able to run a business, which means accounting, making websites and - probably hardest of all - keep working even when customers keep saying 'Sure, we'd love to hear you, but we can't pay you.' It is all part of the game.
